How it works

  1. We work out FPS from the processor and graphics card pairing, calibrated against public 1080p/1440p/4K benchmarks.
  2. The result is the lower of two limits: how much the graphics card can push and how many frames the processor can feed it.
  3. The bottleneck figure shows how well the processor and graphics card are matched: a weak processor shows most at 1080p and less and less towards 4K, while a weak graphics card is the other way round.

What is a bottleneck?

A bottleneck is when one part (usually the processor) limits the performance of another: the graphics card could generate more frames, but the processor cannot prepare them fast enough. A small imbalance is normal - it only becomes a problem when the gap is large and you are not getting the frames you paid for.

Is the calculator accurate?

The FPS model is calibrated against public TechPowerUp, Tom’s Hardware and Hardware Unboxed benchmarks, so the average FPS usually lands within ±15%. The real result depends on the scene in the game, your drivers and RAM speed.

Is my power supply enough?

Once you enter the wattage, the calculator compares it with the estimated load of the whole system (the peak draw of the processor and graphics card) and shows whether there is enough power with a good margin, or whether the unit is working right at its limit.

What should I upgrade first - the processor or the graphics card?

Look at which side limits you at your resolution: if the processor is the limit at 1080p - start with that; if you play at 1440p/4K and the graphics card is the limit - replace that. You can put a new build together in the configurator, with automatic compatibility checking.
