What GPU do you need for 144 FPS? It depends on the game
There is no single 144 FPS graphics card, because the same card can run one game at over 300 FPS and fall short of 100 in another. For each game it covers, our FPS model lists the cheapest card that reaches 144 FPS on High settings when paired with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. In light games the bar is low: at 1080p, Valorant needs roughly GTX 1660 Super-level performance, Minecraft a GTX 1050 Ti, Counter-Strike 2 an RTX 2060 Super and Fortnite an RTX 3060. At 1440p the estimates rise to about a GTX 1070 for Valorant, an RTX 3060 Ti for Counter-Strike 2 and an RTX 3070 for Fortnite. If you mostly play games like these, a mid-range card from a few years ago can already fill a 144 Hz monitor, and the rest of the budget may be better spent on the processor or the screen.
Which games need a mid-range card for 144 FPS?
Big multiplayer shooters and detailed open worlds sit in the middle. In our model, 144 FPS at 1080p on High takes about an RX 7600 in PUBG, an RX 5700 XT in Warzone, and an RTX 5060 Ti in both Battlefield 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2. At 1440p the requirement goes up by one or two tiers: an RX 9060 XT for PUBG, an RTX 5060 Ti for Warzone, an RX 9070 for Battlefield 6 and an RX 7900 XT for Red Dead Redemption 2. Rainbow Six Siege is lighter, reaching 144 FPS with an Arc A770 at 1080p and an RX 7600 at 1440p. Warzone and Battlefield 6 also lean hard on the processor in their biggest matches, so a strong card alone does not guarantee the number.
Which games make 144 FPS hard even on a fast PC?
Some games are simply heavy. Cyberpunk 2077 needs RTX 3080-level performance for 144 FPS at 1080p on High and an RTX 5070 Ti at 1440p, and at 4K no card in our model gets there. Marvel Rivals asks for an RX 9070 XT at 1080p and an RTX 5090 at 1440p. Rust needs an RTX 4070 Super at 1080p, and Escape from Tarkov does not reach 144 FPS on High with any card: even a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an RTX 5090 is estimated at 140 FPS at 1080p. Both of those games lean heavily on the processor, so a faster card alone gains little. In titles like these, 90 to 120 FPS is a sensible target, with a lower preset or upscaling such as DLSS or FSR doing the rest, and a monitor with adaptive sync (FreeSync or G-Sync) keeps the picture smooth below the full refresh rate.
1080p or 1440p for a 144 Hz monitor?
A 1440p screen has about 1.78 times as many pixels as 1080p, 3.7 million against 2.1 million, and in games where the graphics card is the limit, a build in our model keeps roughly three quarters of its 1080p frame rate at 1440p. A Ryzen 5 7600 with an RTX 5070, for example, is estimated at 270 FPS in Fortnite at 1080p and 195 FPS at 1440p, and at 145 and 105 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, all on High. Most 24-inch gaming monitors are 1080p and most 27-inch ones are 1440p, and many budget models now run at 165 or 180 Hz rather than exactly 144. A simple rule: if your card only just clears 144 FPS at 1080p in the games you play, a 1440p monitor will leave you nearer 100 to 110 FPS. If it clears 144 with room to spare, 1440p is the better screen.
Can a weaker processor stop you from reaching 144 FPS?
Yes. The figures above assume a high-end Ryzen 7 9800X3D so that only the graphics card is being measured. With a mid-range processor, CPU-heavy games hit a ceiling that no card can lift. In our model a Ryzen 5 5600 with an RTX 5070 gets 160 FPS in Warzone on High at both 1080p and 1440p, and 80 FPS in Escape from Tarkov at both resolutions. The same card with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D is estimated at 260 and 140 FPS at 1080p. When the number does not change between resolutions, the processor is the limit. Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, Rust and Tarkov are the usual suspects, so for 240 Hz esports play the processor deserves as much attention as the card. Is 8 GB of VRAM enough for 1440p at 144 Hz?
For light esports titles such as Valorant and Counter-Strike 2, 8 GB is plenty at 1440p. Heavier games are a different story: our Warzone page already flags 8 GB as a limit at higher resolutions, and in texture-heavy games an 8 GB card often has to drop texture quality at 1440p even when its raw speed would be enough. An average FPS figure can hide this, because running out of video memory tends to show up as stutter or blurry textures rather than a lower average. If you are buying a card for 1440p at high refresh rates in 2026, treat 12 GB as the minimum and 16 GB as the comfortable choice. Some current models, such as the RTX 5060 Ti and RX 9060 XT, come in both 8 GB and 16 GB versions under the same name, so check the memory size, not just the model.
